Fate

There is love in our bodies
but we can’t let it out
because fate can be
a cruel master;
it dropped us here
too many years apart
and too many lovers between us
block the heart
that holds our secret

Even a lifetime feels smaller
than that distance
because it’s pointless
to entertain this ache,
to let it bloom and play
in forbidden territory

But every bone and muscle
and tissue in this body
betrays me
As soon as you come into view
it short circuits in fast heartbeats
and shallow breath
and parted lips
that nearly say
